Your Table Is a Sanctuary

For the church’s first three centuries it had no serious competitor, and it has never actually been decommissioned — merely abandoned in place, like a rail line everyone still agrees was a good idea.
Why tables work when stages don’t
A stage transmits information to an audience. A table does something categorically different: it makes people known. Which is why the table keeps showing up at the hinge points of the Gospels — Levi’s house, Zacchaeus’s house, Emmaus. Recognition happens at table. Around food, questions arrive unforced and in their natural order — which is almost never the order of a gospel tract. Nobody at your table is being processed. Everybody at a table can talk back, which is precisely what makes the witness given there credible.
A stage transmits information. A table makes people known.
The discipline nobody calls one
We file hospitality under entertaining, next to charcuterie — a gift for extroverts with nice kitchens. Scripture files it under obedience and load-bearing infrastructure: elders must be given to hospitality, and the whole church is told to practice it without grumbling, 1 Timothy 3:2, 1 Peter 4:9. The grumbling clause is the tell — the writers knew exactly how much work this is. which is the Bible’s way of admitting it costs something.
Three deflationary rules, from many years of practice:
- The food is not the point. Soup is sufficient. Takeout is sufficient. The table is the sacrament, not the menu.
- Regularity beats occasion. A standing Thursday table changes a neighborhood; an annual dinner party changes a photo album.
- Mixed company is the design. Believers and skeptics at the same table, on purpose, often — so that faith gets overheard in its natural voice, not performed.
The early church was accused of many things — atheism, cannibalism, treason — but never of being hard to get a meal with. Recover that reputation and much of Part I’s argument starts happening on its own.
